Ars Moriendi – Wellcome Collection

Through a party wall Joanna Walsh shared the experience of her elderly neighbour becoming gradually less able to look after herself and drawing closer to death. It prompted an investigation into the art in the Wellcome Collection library. You can read a little more about that in the slide show below.

Walsh will be spending two weeks at the Wellcome Collection making a drawing based on her time with patients at Sobell House Hospice – a hospice which allows patients and their families to create their own environments and perhaps experience what we would now call a ‘good’ death. The title Ars Moriendi references the medieval instruction manual on how to have a ‘good’ death of the same name.

I’m really looking forward to seeing this. Not in a perversely excited way, but because Wellcome have a history of dealing incredibly well with death. Their Life Before Death exhibition was both devastating and uplifting in equal measure.

Ars Morendi will be taking place at the Wellcome Collection from 2-20 March.
