Octopus Monday: Is octopus/fish stop motion porno art?

One of the dangers of running the Octopus Monday feature is that there are people out there who get a little freaky with tentacles. You find yourself idly flicking through search results and then suddenly you’re into octo-porn territory.

From 'Octopus Love Affair' - Momoko Seto

This was sort of the case with today’s video (so here’s your massive advance warning: THAR BE OCTOPUS/FISH STOP MOTION PORN AHEAD) by French/Japanese filmmaker Momoko Sato but it was really interesting so I have decided to post it anyway and ask for your thoughts.

Momoko Seto – Octopus Love Affair (A Wednesday Afternoon in a Hotel)

Overall I would say that it was intended as a parody of sex and of the parts of sex we choose to caricature in mainstream porn as well as possibly a play on the nudge, nudge, wink, wink saucy seaside postcards of yesteryear and the idea of a seedy trip to a hotel with a lover. I do genuinely like what Seto has done in terms of the idea and the levity he brings as well as the framing devices at the beginning.

That said, I found it a real struggle to watch it straight through. A certain amount of that came from the fact that Seto had dead animals re-enacting a traditional porn scene to a soundtrack of grunts and moans but there was also a kind of primal recoiling at the mucousy wetness of the sextopus, perhaps because it’s such a massive contrast with how animal sex is generally presented, with nature documentaries devoid of interest or emotion while two animals are bonking right in front of your eyes.

And so I’d really like to know how your reacted. Could you watch it? What did you make of it?
